We all love summer but unfortunately, it is not the best time for our skin especially if you are an oily-skinned woman. Sudden rise in temperature and humidity levels make our oil glands produce more sebum which makes the skin look and feel quite awful.
Your face has the highest concentration of sebaceous glands, hence your face feels sticky and looks shiny (not in a good way) all throughout summers as compared to the rest of your body. This results in patchy skin, dullness, acne, and more skin problems. The key to flawless skin all throughout summers is a good skincare routine. Following the right steps with consistency is what will make your skin look flawless. Without further ado, let’s jump straight into the steps.
Most people think that washing their skin, again and again, will get rid of the oiliness on their face. However, it simply doesn’t work like that. Excessively cleansing your skin will strip it off from moisture which signals sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Cleansing your face twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening will clean it without causing dryness. Use a natural face mist to make your skin feel refreshed throughout the day. Avoid using cleansers that have exfoliating beads in them, alcohol, or harsh chemicals as it can lead to flaky skin and redness.
While we are on the subject of cleansing, your fingers do the job just right. There is absolutely no need to invest your money in cleansing brushes. They can do more harm than good if you choose the wrong one.
Our personal favorite cleansers to use during the summer months are iS CLINICAL Cleansing Complex and Zo Skin Health gentle cleanser. They work for all skin types, clean out the skin properly without causing irritation. Both these are a must-have in your summer skin essentials kit. Clean skin is the foundation of good skin after all.
Toners balance the pH levels of your skin and remove any residual product that is left on your face. There are a variety of toners available in the market. Do not use any products with high alcohol content as they will dry out your skin. Use a gentle toner that refreshes your skin without making your skin feel tight and stretched out.
Most people don’t think that they have to moisturize every day during the summer months and we understand as it seems quite counterintuitive. However, keeping your skin hydrated actually helps control oiliness. Choosing the right moisturizer is of critical importance here. Make sure to choose an oil-free product and apply it to your face morning and night after cleansing. It is good to top your moisturizer off with an SPF if it does not offer UVA/UVB protection. Have a closer look at the ingredients. Anything with hyaluronic acid, squalene will work like a charm.
Here are a few moisturizers that we absolutely adore for the summer months; EPIONCE – Renewal Lite Facial Lotion, Cetaphil, and the ordinary.
The internet is flooded with ten-step, twelve-step skincare routines. You don’t need to pile on layers and layers of products to look good. A few simple steps will do the job. Most of the skin damage is a result of sun exposure. Investing in the right sunscreen that offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays will work like a charm for the health of your skin. Choose water-based light sunscreens as they are perfect to use during the summer months especially if you have oily skin.
Also, invest in a good quality serum based on your unique skin concerns. Serums generally penetrate down to the deeper layers of the skin and show promising results. Apply the serum before using moisturizer or heavier creams on clean skin. Here are a few of our serum recommendations; EltaMD Skin Recovery Serum, SKIN BETTER – Alto Defense Serum, SKIN Medica – TNS Essential Serum, and SKIN Medica – TNS Essential Serum.
Keep blotting sheets at hand for when you step out or simply feel oily throughout the day. They are inexpensive and easy to use. You can also use good old tissue paper but a blotting sheet works better without messing up your makeup. You can easily buy a pack of blotting sheets from any drug store and keep it with you at all times. Once you blot your face, top it off with a hydrating, yummy-smelling facial mist to feel fresh.
Let’s face it, one of the biggest problems we face in summers is make-up slipping and slopping off our faces in the summer months. Moreover, the wrong makeup can clog our pores and lead to problems such as excessive oil production, whiteheads, blackheads, and acne.
Choose your makeup carefully. Make sure you get your hands on makeup products that have breathable formulations, are mattifying, contain SPF and last a long time. Keep the makeup light. Avoid heavy, full coverage foundation, stick to tinted moisturizer and bb creams. Opt for tints instead of heavy blushes and lipsticks. Always use waterproof mascara and liner to avoid panda eyes. Do not use silicone-based products in the summertime. Remove every ounce of makeup from your face before sleeping, followed by a three-step; cleanse, tone, and moisturize routine.
Summer comes with its own set of challenges for our skin. If you follow all the steps mentioned in this article, your skin will not only look but also feel better. Your makeup will also last much longer and will not turn into a slippery, sloppy mess. These tips will help people of all skin types especially the ones with oily skin. If you want, you can always visit a skin specialist to get product recommendations for your skin type. One last tip is to pay attention to the ingredient list rather than the brand name and you will see your skin transform.
